Who We Are
The GWU Canine Cognition Collaborative is a comparative cognition group that explores the evolution of social intelligence. We are a proud branch of the Subiaul Social Cognition Lab. Established in the early 2000’s, we are interested in understanding what evolutionary factors made humans special.
Our research group studies both children and dogs. We do that to understand how environmental factors can result in similar social abilities, even when species – like humans and dogs – aren’t close genetically.
By studying the cognitive abilities of many species, we can better understand what specific abilities make humans so special.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
DEI is central to the way we do research. We are a POC-led group that seeks to inspire young people from historically underserved backgrounds to join academia. We use a student-centered, individualized approach to help mentees grow to their full capacities. If you want to join our team, we have detailed recommendations on how to make yourself stand out on the for students page.
Animal Welfare League of Arlington
Community Partners
We are proud to partner with the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA). AWLA provides our team with a testing space. In return, we provide their dogs fun games and lots of cuddles! Please support AWLA; we would not be able to do research without them!

Dog Friends
Join our team and contribute to our research! We partner with local animal rescue, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which is kind enough to provide a testing space. Our research uses fun games where your dog gets lots of snacks. It is a great way to get their brains going and have fun yourself!
Students
As an undergraduate researcher, you have the ability to gain endless skills. We welcome students from all backgrounds and experience levels. Previous experience isn’t a requirement, but curiosity about the world is.
